Google Doodle honors Gerardus Mercator - the inventor of flat map

Today, March 5, 2015 marks Gerardus Mercator’s 503rd Birthday.  In Canada and some courtiers in Europe and Africa, we can see Google Doodle for this anniversary.

In 1544, Mercator was Jailed for heresy.

In 1569, he created the first flat map.

With this Mercator Projection, sailors could use straight lines to plot a route for sailing.  Mercator passed away on Dec. 2, 1594 and he missed the chance to see his projection adopted  by European navigators in the 18th century.
