RUN SKUNK RUN - photo copyright @ Alan Levine - Flickr |
We
turned our clocks forward and changed the batteries in our smoke detectors
yesterday. Now, we need to refresh our memory
of our white striped skunk friends.
If
skunks are frightened, they will spray
their enemies - human, dogs, cats or outdoor furniture. Sometimes, they will warn their victim(s) by pounding
the ground with their front feet. Please remember, skunks don’t always give us
any warning to tell us that they are about to spray. From an unconfirmed source, a skunk can spray
up to 5.5 meters or 18 feet. How fast
can you or your pet run?
How
to get rid of the skunk smell?
Confirmed
with my friend:
Bath
in tomato juice won't help
Perfume
or air freshener (not for your pets!) won't help
Here
is my friend's DIY skunk smell removal for dogs. She is American, so, she uses American
measuring cups and spoons.

DIY
skunk smell removal for dogs
Ingredients:
4
cup (960 ml) 3 % hydrogen peroxide
1/4
cup baking soda
1
teaspoon dish detergent
Directions:
1.
Wear old clothes.
2.
Secure the sprayed victim.
3.
Wear rubber gloves.
4.
Mix all Ingredients.
5.
Rub mixture on the sprayed victim thoroughly and let the mixture sit for five
minutes.
6.
Rinse with water and repeat the same treatment if necessary.
Note:
*
The mixture works better if the sprayed victim is dry.
*
The mixture may cause serious eye damage.
Avoid contact with eyes.
*
Dish detergent helps to break up the oily skunk spray.
*
We can buy 3 % hydrogen peroxide at the first aid section of any supermarket or
drug store.
* If
you have any concern, please bring your pet to see the vet right away.

When my friend walks her dog, she brings a bottle of water with her. So, if her dog accidently got sprayed in the eyes, she can flush the eyes with water right away.
I
wonder if there would be a device to friendly tell the skunk to walk away. Or, we just be smart and walk away from a
skunk quietly with our pets.
