Loco moco is a recognized cultural cuisine icon in Hawaii, Alvin!!

Last night (May 10) at the MasterChef Canada (CTV) the self-taught Demon Chef judge Alvin Leung told one of the contestants Christopher Siu that his loco moco is nothing Hawaiian.  Alvin, you are so wrong.  Loco moco is a Hawaiian culinary staple.  Everyone who loves Hawaii or every Hawaiian knows loco moco.  It is a Hawaiian comfort food / fast food same as poutine to Canadian.

So, what is a Hawaiian loco moco (loh-koo moh-koo)?

There are many variations of loco moco.  The basic one is white rice topped with a hamburger patty, a sunnyside-up egg and brown gravy.  Well, Alvin, loco moco is not something you will eat at upscale hotels and restaurants in Hawaii. This maybe the reason why you don't know.  It is not a new fusion dish either.  It was created in the late 1940s and it is a popular dish for many Pacific rim countries including Japan.  My Japanese friends love it.

My mum loves this Canadian competitive cooking reality show - MasterChef Canada.  The first season's winner is Eric Chong from Oakville, Ontario.  We are waiting to see who will be the second season's winner in this month.
