Battleship Island is an English name
for Gunkanjima [軍艦島], aka Hashima Island [端島]. It is an uninhabited island in
Nagasaki, Japan. But since 1887, it had been established as undersea coal mines
for decades.
This island is a symbol of Japan's
industrialization before
and after World War II. It also reminds us of its dark history before and
during World War II.
During the Japanese Occupation Era (1910
- 1945), approximately thousands of Korean and Chinese civilians were forced to
work in coal mines of Battleship Island. According to Wikipedia, workers had to
dig up coals in the undersea coal mines with temperatures of 30°C and 95%
humidity.
